Person arrives at location. Met by captain

Get your self into a line facing me. I am captain … you will refer to me as sir at all times, do you understand me?

Crew-Yes sir

Capt- bullshit I can’t hear you

(captain pacing back and forth)

Capt- you are no longer allowed to refer to this as a performance. You have come here under your own will and you will do exactly as I command. You will speak when spoken to and the first and last words to come out of your mouth will be sir do you understand me?

Yes sir

We are providing you an opportunity for glory. To be part of something that is bigger than yourselves. A true way to make a difference in the world and for your country. To give yourself to a collective where there is a place and a need for you, an institute which is mighty and noble, you will understand the meaning of a true community, you will understand yourself as an individual and the meaning of sacrificing to a cause. You’re county is relying on you and your duty is needed. Here you will learn the hardship of voluntary surrender and begin to understand what it takes to be part of the navy.

When I shout attention you will solute with your right hand and point your feet at 90 degrees.

Copy me

Yes sir

Come on I’m not paying you stand around

Stand over hear in a line

(on the wall there is a piece of paper which the participants will read off)

I want each of you to put your hand on your chest

Recruit one, you see the pledge. Read it

We are now going to march around the room, follow me.

Here we provide order and discipline, you are being trained to be part of a collective, one which moves and a unit, thinks and a unit and has the same values as a unit.

HALT! Now get on the ground and show me 40 sit ups

Repeat after me

  • I will not attack or harm enemy personnel who surrender.

NOW GET UP, we are marching

I don’t know what I’ve been told,

I don’t know what I’ve been told.

Navy bones are made of gold

Navy bones are made of gold

And when we’re serving our country

And when we’re serving our country

Teamwork equals victory

Teamwork equals victory

Halt in a line…

(captain goes to one participant whilst jogging) you who’s the weakest in the group?

You same question… (ask everyone who the weakest is)

(weakest) stand up and get over here, do the crawling position. Bend down like a frog.

(to the person who stops) you’re weak, everyone I want you to chant with me

you’re weak, you’re weak …

captain yells at weakest, come on is that all you’ve got

Get up… come here

Pick up the rocks.

Hold them above your head.

Weakest link- pick up the rocks. Hold them above your head.

Capt- Yell at them, come on yell (capt yells in weakest links face)

(after 30 seconds)

Capt- push them in front of you, come on you pile of shit tell them…

(30 seconds)

Is something wrong, you all look so glum, too hard for you?

Capt to weakest- Tell them to drop the rock and give you 20 sit ups.

Weakest- drop the rock and give you 20 sit ups

Capt to weakest- yell at them

Capt- everyone say, thank you for the 20 sit ups…

thank you for the 20 sit ups…

again

thank you for the 20 sit ups…

again

thank you link for the 20 sit ups…

Capt- listen very carefully. You are going to be captured. You are going to be questioned. You cannot pass on any important information to your capturers. You must not say yes or no to them because your answers will be recorded and they can manipulate. You must not aggravate them. You must think of a fake story to tell them why you are here, how you and how you all met. You must not reveal that you are under training to be part of the navy. Your captures have access to your social media and any online information of you so try not to let the information stray too far from the truth.

Do you understand me?

Yes sir

You have 5 minutes

(film participants talking to one another Emily behind camera)

alarm goes of.

I come on in back and a bandanna-

“Line up against the wall…”

put bags over their heads… loud music playing

put participants in stress positions

Take one outside. Capt stays in with participants- if they move out of the position, she puts them back in it.

Take one participant at a time outside. Questions to ask:

What’s your name?

Why are you here?

And how do you know the other people in the group?

Why are you all in the same uniform?

Can you write down your next of kin information?

You look tired are you tired?

Do you not think that it looks a bit odd that you have all the same uniform on?

Did you buy these uniforms?

(try and catch them out by saying yes or no, contradicting stories, giving away too much information or not enough)

if there is contradicting information get the people who contradict together and question them infront of each other.

Place everyone back on the floor in stress positions whilst I discuss with captain and a camera (on a tripod) tell captain who was the most successful and why. i.e person who lied most convincingly, didn’t give up cover story, didn’t say yes and no.

Captain comes in and explain who won and why. Gives them a badge.

Turning Ali into a captain

Now that I had a better understanding of the characteristics of a Captain and some basic Navy training I was ready to transform someone else into the captain for my Live Naval Play. I wanted to make some changes to the character I based my own transformation on, to a captain who is more harsh and intimidating. looking at the film full metal jacket, the language and body language used.
