Themed hotels

A hotel is a place to act of a fantasised version of oneself; we experience ourselves differently in the confinements of our new room. This is even more the case in themed hotels, where we enter a physically made up fictional space. These range from 007 suite in Paris to a Hello Kitty room in Tokyo to a Batman suite [1]. These spaces physically bring the space of a fictional narrative into the realms of physical living, we can adapt ourselves into the characters of each room or imagine the room is the characters room and we are experience being in their space. Through being in these spaces we are transported to a place that doesn’t exist, all that exists of it is a copy, a replica made by a hotel group or the theme park. We want to explore more from the characters of the narratives, we want to get closer to their lives. Yet the rooms do not feel like we know the characters any more, we are not really around the characters belonging rather we are around the merchandise of these characters. We know what it would be like to be in a bedroom of a super fan of batman or hello kitty, not what batman’s room would actually look like.
